I was so fortunate to travel to New Zealand. An invitation from my friend and fellow IAC member, John Parker, to come and do a workshop in Auckland made this dream a reality. John was an exceptional host. He showed me some of the spectacular sites of the area, including black sand beaches and volcanic land formations. He has a lovely house in a lush tropical paradise, filled with Mao memorabilia. He introduced me to a number of wonderful ceramic artists in Auckland, where we visited many studios and galleries. The museums of Auckland are impressive and I enjoyed learning about Maori culture.   An opening at the Auckland Art Museum exemplified importance of art and culture to the country.

The highlight was teaching a workshop for the Auckland Potters Society. This ceramics center has been around for over fifty years and is very impressive. I have over 20 enthusiastic people participating in the workshop. I enjoyed getting to know them. Their warmth and generosity helped me feel very welcome.

Yes, New Zealand is a long way away from the US and it took two days to get there, which was grueling. However, I have to say the time and travel are worth it to be able to visit this stunning country with its gracious people.
