A post on Barcelona is not complete without a homage to the master architect Gaudi. As part of the International Academy of Ceramics Assembly, we traveled to a number of his landmarks. One is his apartment building Casa Milà ‘La Pedrera’ a functioning apartment building as well as museum. The roof is a famous site, but I most liked the attic where I could see Gaudi’s brilliant use of catenary arches for structure and strength. We also visited Parc Guell. Again, the famous benches and ceramic tile sculptures were not the most impressive to me. The columns and cave like structures were clay-like and amazing to walk under. I stayed on an extra day and visited Sagrada Famiglia, Gaudi’s famous cathedral in process. Close to completion, the sense of space and light is unique in all the famous cathedrals I have visited around the world.
