Tanshui is not a remarkable city, but nearby we saw one of the remarkable Buddhist grottos – the Maiji Shan Grottos. Many were gated with screens and a guide was required to open them up. These Buddha’s are made of wood and hay structures covered in clay. The paint is amazingly fresh on some of the figures and murals. Seeing the grottoes was quite a challenge, as you can see from the photo.
We stopped in a remote village to see the largest and finest group of Neolithic painted pots any of us have ever seen in all our travels. The Qinghai Liuwant Ancient painted Pottery Museum is a gem.
