We stayed in Turpan for two nights, as there is so much to see in the surrounding areas. The Emi Minaret is a beautiful display of intricate brickwork. As there is clay and sand everywhere in this area, bricks are a readily available building material. This is an Afghan style structure from 1777.
The Museum of Turpan is very interesting. It chronicles the Silk Road’s history. It is famous for its mummies and burial sites. The dry desert air preserved them for centuries. The pottery from the tombs is also impressive.
